The Daniel Fast…Part 2

January, 2016

In this blog post I’ll be getting into my feelings, recipes that I’ve found great and the way God has been talking to me.

So let’s get into the details of this fast. So the first day probably was the hardest so far, as my job as a Visual Merchandiser is quite strenuous I need a breakfast that’s filling. Waking up early and being in a rush is the norm for me so an ‘on the go’ breakfast is a must.

My favourite breakfast smoothie consists of:

  • 1 Banana
  • Soya milk (unsweetened)
  • Oats
  • A small handful of cashew nuts

This smoothie is high in fibre and rich in vitamins B-complex, C, Biotin, Potassium, Manganese and its high in protein. So it’s definetly nourishing and offers a sugar boost in the mornings (which I definitely need), it’s my form of coffee. This fast is quite intense in the beginning but it gets easier and has its rewards.

Speaking of rewards energy levels are a lot higher than usual, now for lunch I have been loving chick pea and butternut squash curry with spinach and brown rice. A few people have noticed that I wasn’t eating my usual food, which always contain either meat or cheese (hide’s face) and it gave me an opportunity to talk about the fast. I didn’t know anything about the fast before going to my church, so it’s been fun educating those who may not know about it.

Dinner’s have been just as interesting and nourishing, ratatouille is a favourite and kidney bean stew, along with simple brown pasta with chilli tomato sauce (all home made).

This list of meals probably makes it sound like it’s been a walk in the park, when really it hasn’t been. I’ve felt quite down in the first few days, looking at my calendar thinking ‘I can’t do this!’ And it was in those moment’s that I stopped pouting and realised there are people in the world with a limited amount of food to eat or rather none at all. This lead me to realise that I needed to stop being ridulous and eat the huge variety of food that God has given me, and eat with a grateful heart.

As I said in my previous post I had overindulged at Christmas. So my eating habits had gone all over the place, everything I ate was high in fat and sugar. So this fast was literally a gift that God had sent me and it came the right time, because he’s always on time of course! And it’s not only opened my eyes to see how blessed I am, but also to be creative in the kitchen. God’s presence has been felt in a new way, and he has continually renewed my strength throughout.

In the next post I’ll be giving my thoughts on the how the fast impacted my prayer life, and attitude towards food.

See you again soon and stay blessed!
