Make room for the new

July, 2019

Holy Spirit often talks to me through flowers, I’m not sure if it’s their beauty and colour but something about them always has a story to tell.

As I stood in my kitchen, each day my mum and I would look at our orchid. It’s a beautiful plant, so clean and pretty, it sprouted about 8 flowers on the stem that started growing to the right out of the central stem. As all flowers grow, they die (no surprise there) though these lasted for 6 months or so.

Towards the end of the 6 months, out of the central stem a new branch began to sprout. It wasn’t as long as the previous stem on the right so it wasn’t as impressive. Over the next few weeks I paid little attention to it, it didn’t have as many flowers as the previous stem and so I thought well at least we have something.. something is better than nothing.

As I watched these 2 flowers begin to unfurl I realised they were draining all of the nutrients from the right stem. The petals were almost the size of my palm, I thought it was quite strange. As it continued to grow the stem on the right grew older and so, one by one the flowers fell.

Over the next couple of weeks the flowers on the left stem doubled in number and in the following weeks it doubled again. Eleven flowers eventually came out of the left branch and they came up fast, the stem got so heavy that we had to prop it up using a palm cross – the ones you get for Easter Sunday.

So as I looked at the flowers and observed this, Holy Spirit said “The old has to die before the new can come”.

Whenever I hear from God it almost feels like I need to look at my life and observe the past, present and future. What old things have died for the new to make way? What current things need to fall away to make sure that the new can come, in the future?

God also reminds me that He is behind the scenes changing us from the inside out, it’s for us to stay close and hear His whisper. It’s not always a loud voice, most of the time it never is!

I wanted to share this because it feels like a topic that will never get old, we are constantly changing and re-evaluating ourselves, our lives, goals and relationships. God is in our midst, in the midst of it all.

I hope this can encourage you if you’re in a season of change, letting go of the old. It’s sometimes hardest thing but when we trust God even when His plan doesn’t look that impressive, He’ll always provide abundantly more than we could ever ask or imagine.

Prayer

Glory, praise and honour be to You and You alone Lord Jesus. Thank you for leading our lives, for guiding our path. Help us to hear your voice as we press into You O’Lord. We thank you for the abundant provision and path you set before us. For strength and peace in times of uncertainty.

In Jesus name we pray, Amen.
